Year-Long Isoniazid Course Adequate to Prevent TB in HIV+

A nine to 12 month course of isoniazid gives long-term protection against tuberculosis and significantly increases survival in patients who are dually infected with HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, according to a report from Spain.

Prophylaxis of most opportunistic infections in HIV infected patients requires lifelong administration of an effective drug. The effects of isoniazid in the prevention of TB in HIV infected patients with relatively preserved immunity has been established in retrospective and prospective studies, but the long-term efficacy of the drug is unknown.
