Experts On Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Gather in Guatemala

Experts on measles, polio, and other diseases preventable by vaccination met in Guatemala City, Guatemala, September 8-12, 1997 to discuss the current campaign to eliminate measles in the Americas, research and vaccine development, maintaining polio eradication, and other topics.

At the meeting, the Pan American Health Organizations (PAHO) Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Vaccine Preventable Diseases considered the current measles outbreak in Brazil, in which over 4,000 cases have been confirmed, compared to only 580 cases last year, said Dr. Ciro de Quadros, director of PAHO's Special Program for Vaccines and Immunization.
