CDC: Rotavirus Vaccine Needed In U.S.

Rotavirus is a major cause of serious childhood disease and effective vaccines are needed in the United States, according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

U.S. licensing of rotavirus vaccines is anticipated in the near future.

To evaluate vaccine safety and disease burden in U.S. children, the CDC has established the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD), a cohort of some 500,000 children enrolled in four health maintenance organizations. Data from this study were used to estimate the impact of rotavirus disease.
