According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1997 Annual Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 26-30, 1997, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Purpose: To determine the maximum number of sputum specimens necessary to confirm the diagnosis of pulmonary TB. Methods: We retrospectively studied 56 patients with culture-positive pulmonary TB. All patients underwent sputum induction. Three specimens were obtained in each case. Forty-six (82%) patients (30 males, 16 females, age range 13-69 years) were HIV negative, while 10 (18%) patients (9 males, 1 female, age range 34-51 years) had AIDS.
