"Dry Pleural Biopsy for TB Diagnosis: Analysis In 107 Patients."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1997 Annual Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 26-30, 1997, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Purpose: Determine the diagnostic yield and complications of dry pleural biopsy with Cope needle. Methods: Between Jan/93 and May/97, 108 biopsies were performed in 107 patients (1 patient had both hemothoraxes biopsied) with evidence of pleural disease, and no fluid in thoracocentesis. Results: Histopathological diagnosis (Dx) in the 1st attempt: 62 tuberculous (TBC) pleuritis, 1 neoplasias and 45 inconclusive (12 were likely TBC, 6 non tuberculous pleuritis and 27 undetermined).
