Ribavirin Has Role in HIV Associated Pneumonia

Ribavirin therapy appears to be beneficial for the treatment of adenovirus pneumonia associated with AIDS.

Adenoviruses are common pathogens associated with severe infections in immunosuppressed hosts, and particularly in patients with secondary immunodeficiencies, such as transplant recipients, cancer patients undergoing immunosuppressive chemotherapy, and HIV infected patients. The outcome is usually fatal unless the cause of immunosuppression can be interrupted.
