According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Since the resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) in 1985, outbreaks of nosocomial Mycobacterium tuberculosis among hospitalized acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients have occurred. To assess the degree of implementation of the CDC TB Guidelines at hospitals with or without large numbers of AIDS patient admissions, in 1992 we surveyed two U.S. hospital groups: a) hospitals (N=38) with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) patients, and b) a large sample (N=1076) of acute care (AC) hospitals.
