PPD Skin Testing Valuable in BCG Vaccinated Populations

Tuberculin skin testing can identify active Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in children who have received prior bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccination, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Botswana Ministry of Health.

In a study of tuberculosis infection among children in Botswana, where 90 percent of infants receive bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination at birth, researcher D. Rumisha and colleagues found that an induration of 10 mm was indicative of active infection and not vaccine-induced anergy.
