DNR Testing Deer, Small Wild Animals for Tuberculosis

Deer and other wild animals in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, are being tested for bovine tuberculosis that may have infected some farm-raised elk.

So far, one deer has been shot and tested, but no signs of the incurable disease were found, said Sarah Shapiro Hurley, a veterinarian for the state Department of Natural Resources.

Using bait stations, the agency plans to kill at least 10 deer southwest of Manitowoc and test them for tuberculosis before the gun-hunting season which was scheduled for opening November 22, 1997.
