Drug Resistance Along Mexican Border Threat to U.S.

An increase in drug resistant tuberculosis among border residents of Mexico's Baja California represents a potential threat to those living nearby in the United States, according to a report from the San Diego County Department of Health.

"A high proportion of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated from this group of Baja California patients were resistant to at least one primary drug," researcher Christopher Peter and colleagues wrote in an abstract presented at the American Society for Microbiology's 37th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC), held September 28 to October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
