Health Experts Emphasize Need to Curb Spread of Infectious Disease

The new U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, reported to a Senate health subcommittee on March 3, 1998, that surveillance measures cannot keep up with the ability of infectious diseases to spread in modern times.

"Technological changes such as rapid air travel and global distribution of foods, and social problems such as drug abuse and homelessness, have contributed to the spread of infectious diseases" Satcher explained, wrote Les Bowman in the March 4, 1998, edition of the Washington Times newspaper ("Infectious-Disease Deaths on Rise, Medical Experts Tell Congress," p. A8).
