According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1997 Annual Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 26-30, 1997, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Purpose: With the world-wide upsurge in tuberculosis, there is concern about the development of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). There is however, very little information from Africa on the outcome of treatment of patients with this disease. In January 1990 we established a dedicated MDR-TB clinic.
