According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "There is no standard method of susceptibility testing of MAC isolates, although many laboratories use the Bactec 460 culture system. Bactec culture has several important limitations: (1) the Bactec machine has only a moderate throughput (60 vials/90 min.); (2) Bactec involves the use of radioactive materials; (3) comparatively large amounts of drug are required for testing; and (4) it is expensive.
