Romanian Doctors Alarmed at Tuberculosis Spread

One Romanian dies every three hours of tuberculosis (TB) and almost 70 people contract the disease every day, a Romanian medical official was quoted as saying.

Ioan Stoicescu, manager of Bucharest's hospital for lung disease, cited the figures at a symposium to mark World Tuberculosis Day.

"In the World Health Organization's (WHO) records on 179 countries, Romania takes 21st place after countries in Africa, South America or India," Stoicescu was quoted as saying.

To mark the day, the WHO issued a report pointing to sharp increases in eastern Europe, particularly in Russia and other former Soviet republics.
