According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held March 8-11, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "The principal host defense against infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the formation of a granuloma. This complex of activated macrophages, T lymphocytes, and fibroblasts is capable of preventing active disease by sequestering the invading organisms within this complex where they may remain latent for many years.
