MTT is Cheap, Accessible Test for Rifampin Resistance

The yellow dye MTT test may be reliable for the rapid detection of rifampin resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The simple and inexpensive test could one day extend multidrug-resistance testing to areas which currently have little access to existing lab-intensive tests, researchers say.

"The MTT assay could, in combination with a test to detect resistance to isoniazid, be a cheap and rapid screening method for multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is affordable even by low-income countries where tuberculosis is a major public health problem," Robert N.
