PCR Detects Tuberculosis Pathogen from Air Samples

Collaborating researchers from several institutions in Florida, USA, have found that in a hospital setting, micropore membrane air sampling with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis is as effective as sputum cultures for diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

They collected samples of circulating air in the hospital rooms of 10 patients "under respiratory isolation to rule out M. tuberculosis infection." The membrane filters underwent PCR analysis. Sputum samples also were collected from the patients.
