Ventilator-Pneumonia More Frequent in Those with ARDS

Confirmed ventilator-associated pneumonia occurs far more often in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome than in other ventilated patients, according to a report from France.

"Because these patients are often treated with antibiotics early in the course of the syndrome, the onset of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is frequently delayed after the first week of mechanical ventilation, and is then caused mainly by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other multiresistant microorganisms," Jean Chastre and colleagues wrote ("Nosocomial Pneumonia in Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome," American Journal of Respiratory and...
