TB Patients' Reluctance to Pursue Treatment Not Due to Illness

Results of a survey conducted in Los Angeles, California, of symptomatic tuberculosis patients showed that factors unrelated to their disease prompted delay in seeking treatment.

Based on two measures: self-reported delay of more than 60 days in seeking care upon noticing symptoms and self-reported access barriers, West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), researchers found:

  • 20 percent of 248 survey respondents delayed seeking care for more than 60 days (mean = 74 days; standard deviation (SD) = 216 days).

  • Each patient delaying care exposed an average of eight other people to TB.
