TB Continued to Decline in U.S During 1997

1997 marked the fifth straight year of declining tuberculosis cases in the United States, but saw a slight increase in cases among foreign-born persons, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

"The decline in the overall number of reported tuberculosis cases has been attributed to stronger TB-control programs that emphasize promptly identifying persons with TB, initiating appropriate therapy, and ensuring completion of therapy," researchers from the CDC Division of Tuberculosis Elimination wrote ("Tuberculosis Mortality - United States," Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, April 1998;47(13):253-257).
