New Tuberculosis Vaccines Show Promise

Two different approaches to tuberculosis vaccines show promise and may one day surpass the current vaccine used against the disease said a report in the June 1998 issue of the journal Infection and Immunity.

Researchers from Colorado State University; Merck Research Laboratories, West Point, Pennsylvania; the Pasteur Institute in Brussels, Belgium; and Texas A&M University looked at two potential vaccines for tuberculosis. One was based on a tuberculosis protein and the other was a piece of DNA from the bacterium. Both conferred protection against infection in guinea pigs.
