Soviet Collapse May Mean MDR-TB Epidemic in Finland

The collapse of the Soviet Union may prompt an epidemic of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis reaching all the way to Finland.

A six-year cumulative distribution of new multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases in Finland shows the number of cases to be increasing at an alarming rate.

"According to our geographical model, the MDR-TB epidemic seems to be concentrated in the capital region (Helsinki) with its high incidence of homeless people," researcher Markku Loytonen and colleagues from the University of Turku wrote ("MDR-TB in Finland - A Forecast," Social Science Medicine, 1998;46(6):695-702).
