Aspects of Legionnaires' Disease Reviewed

Diagnostic techniques and treatments for the pathogen causing Legionnaires' disease, Legionella, were reviewed in the June 1998 issue of Seminars in Respiratory Infection.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention workers, R.F. Breiman and J.C. Butler, described Legionnaires' disease, or legionellosis, as "a modern environmental infectious disease." The Legionella bacterium develops within amoebae in warm water environments. Equipment such as air conditioning systems, hot tub jets, and other machines that release fine water droplets (aerosol) can serve as a habitat for these amoebae and their bacterial guests.
