Counting Practices May Be Masking Epidemic

Government reporting practices may be masking an explosion of tuberculosis cases in the poorest sections of Peru, a report from Baltimore's Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health charges.

The researchers found that tuberculosis incidence in a Peruvian shantytown was almost three times higher than government estimates.

"Alarming clusters of pulmonary tuberculosis are masked (in Peru) by government reports that pool zones of disparate incidence," Darshak M. Sanghavi and colleagues wrote ("Hyperendemic Pulmonary Tuberculosis in a Peruvian Shantytown," American Journal of Epidemiology, August 1998;148(4):384-389).
