China at Public Health Crossroads

China has reached a crossroads in its public health development and faces an uphill battle against communicable diseases, HIV, and tobacco, a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official said.

In a speech to students and administrators at Beijing Medical University, director-general Gro Harlem Brundtland praised China's health care developments over the past 40 years, and pledged expanded WHO cooperation with Beijing. But she warned the threat of disease continued to tax the country's health resources.
