rpoB Gene Mutations in Rifampin-Resistant TB Studied

Ser-531 mutations were found to be present in more than half of the rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates examined in an Asian study.

Researcher Chiyoji Abe and colleagues from Japan's Research Institute of Tuberculosis analyzed mutations in the rpoB gene encoding the (beta)-subunit of the RNA polymerase of rifampin-resistant M. tuberculosis isolates from mostly Asian countries.

Abe reported their findings at the IBC's International Conference on Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, held December 10-11, 1998, in McLean, Virginia.
