Contagious Man Infects Train Passengers

A man with undiagnosed tuberculosis who spent 29 hours on a train over a two-day period may have infected several people with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

But despite this finding, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report questions the wisdom of conducting widespread contact investigations in similar situations.

"This investigation suggests that the risk to most other passengers and crew is probably minimal," Marisa Moore and colleagues wrote ("A Train Passenger with Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Evidence of Limited Transmission During Travel," Clinical Infectious Diseases, January 1999;28:52-56).
