A tissue culture bilayer system that mimics some aspects of early alveolar infection by M. tuberculosis was developed. This model incorporates human lung epithelial type II pneumocyte (A549) (upper chamber) and endothelial cell (lower chamber) layers separated by a microporous membrane.
