The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was compared with the conventional smear and culture method for the detection and identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 25 induced sputa samples ("Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis by the Amplicor Test for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Induced Sputum," Nihon Kokyuki Gakkai Zasshi, November 1998;36(11):959-962).
