Mass Immunization Plan Announced To Fight Meningitis

North Dakota state officials announced plans to vaccinate nearly 5,000 young people in Williston to try to prevent the spread of a bacterial infection that killed a two-year-old boy.

"We're recommending that children in Williston between 18 months and up to 21 years be immunized," said Dr. Stephen McDonough, North Dakota Health Department.

Health officials confirmed that the two-year-old who died was infected with a bacterium known as Type C meningococcus. It is among the bacteria types that causes meningitis. Two other preschoolers are being treated for the bacterial infection.
