Rampant MDR-TB Spread Could Be Controlled with DOTS

The epidemic of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the former Soviet Union's prisons could be halted with an aggressive program of directly observed therapy, researchers suggest.

Ever escalating rates of tuberculosis, including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), have been reported from the former Soviet Union.

Belgium's Institute of Tropical Medicine has supported operational studies in jails in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Mariinsk, Siberia.
