An effective adenovirus vaccine was developed more than 25 years ago. However, Wyeth-Lederle stopped adenovirus vaccine production in 1996. Military supplies finally were exhausted in 1999.
The virus is the leading cause of febrile respiratory illness (FRI) among military trainees. It spreads rapidly under the crowded conditions typical in U.S. military training bases.
