Harmless Duck Flu Virus a Potential Vaccine for Bird Flu

A strain of influenza virus from migratory ducks that does not cause disease in humans may be a potential vaccine against the virulent bird-flu that appeared briefly in Hong Kong or other, yet-to-be-identified pandemic strains of influenza, report researchers from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan and the University of Hong Kong.

Two years ago a new subtype of influenza virus, H5N1, was responsible for series of fatal cases of influenza in Hong Kong.
