Prisoners Are High-Risk Group that Should Be Targeted for TB Screening

Jails are a prime site for detecting - and possibly transmitting - tuberculosis (TB), a new study finds.

In an article in the October 19, 1999, issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, Timothy F. Jones and colleagues reported on TB transmission in an urban jail in Memphis, Tennessee, during a three-year period. Thirty-eight inmates and five guards were diagnosed with active tuberculosis ("Transmission of Tuberculosis in a Jail," Annals of Internal Medicine, October 19, 1999;131:557-563).

The researchers interviewed the inmates and guards who had tuberculosis and examined their medical records. They also conducted DNA fingerprinting on specimens...
