Mutant M. tuberculosis Evaluated for Immune Properties

A mutant of Mycobacterium tuberculosis deficient in antigen 85 complex B may prove to offer superior tuberculosis immunity, murine studies suggest.

The studies were presented at the First International Congress on Cytokines/Chemokines in Infectious Diseases, held September 8-10, 1999, in Bethesda, Maryland.

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine has provided different levels of protection against tuberculosis ranging from 0-80 percent.

"The search for better vaccines has continued," C. Jagannath and colleagues from the University of Texas Health Science Center wrote in a poster presented at the conference.
