Nucleic acid amplification (NAA) tests for direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in respiratory specimens have the potential to provide a more rapid diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) than is currently possible by conventional stain, culture, and identification tests.
