Mexico Responds to TB Concerns

Stung by US concerns over tuberculosis cases in border areas and among immigrants, the Mexican government said it is working with US officials to track disease carriers and ensure they take medication.

"There is an understanding between our two countries to strengthen control, supervision and prevention efforts," Mexico's Health Secretariat said in a press statement on January 4, 2000.

In December 1999, US President Clinton appointed eight medical professionals to a US-Mexico border health commission charged with improving health standards for those living in border regions like southern Texas, where tuberculosis rates are high. The New York Times...
