Varidase Effective for Eradicating Staph. aureus Biofilms

Varidase, a drug composed mostly of streptokinase and used to hydrolyze clots, is effective at breaking up hard-to-kill biofilms formed of Staphylococcus aureus, say researchers.

"Staphylococcus aureus forms a fibrin-rich biofilm in the presence of plasma which is highly resistant to attack by the human immune system and to chemotherapy," explained K. Nemoto and colleagues at the University of Tokushima in Japan ("Effect of Varidase (Streptokinase) on biofilm formed by Staphylococcus aureus," Chemotherapy, March-April 2000;46(2):111-115).
