Hypothermia Stops Brain Inflammation During Viral Attack

Scientists at the Yokohama City University School of Medicine investigated why hypothermia treatment for an influenza virus infection might stop destruction and inflammation of neural cells, thereby preventing acute encephalopathy and encephalitis.

They outlined their hypothesis in Pediatrics International.

The scientists, led by S. Yokota in the Department of Pediatrics, treated four children with acute encephalopathy and encephalitis with hypothermia therapy. This was done for cytokine stabilization in the central nervous system, according to the investigators.
