Researcher Says U.S. Not Prepared for Medical Impact of Attack

The United States is not prepared for a bioterrorist attack, according to Michael T. Osterholm, PhD, MPH, the chair and chief executive officer of ican, INC., in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Osterholm made his comments at an American Medical Association media briefing on infectious diseases, held in Washington, DC, on June 1.

There are three elements that make a bioterrorist attack possible: perpetrators, the availability of toxic or disease-causing agents, and the technology to produce and disseminate these agents. "A bioterrorist event may occur when these three elements converge," says Osterholm. "And we are not prepared for such an event."
