Chickens Act as Sentinels Along U.S./Canadian Border

Wary of a killer mosquito-borne virus, Health Canada has placed 600 live chickens along 1,550 miles of its border with the U.S. to help monitor the spread of such maladies as the West Nile virus.

The virus can cause a form of encephalitis which killed seven people in the New York City area last year.

Health Canada spokesman Eric Morin said 60 coops with 10 chickens have been placed at "strategic locations" along the border. Morin was unable to say exactly where the birds were because he didn't know. "They're posted all along the border, from Saskatchewan to the Atlantic," Morin said.
