Patients with Early Stage HIV Infection are Resistant to TB

Alveolar macrophages (AM) from patients with early HIV infection are resistant to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, researchers in the United States report.

"HIV infected individuals are predisposed to infection with TB," reported H.L. Twigg, III, and colleagues in Indianapolis, Indiana. "The initial response to TB infection is phagocytosis by AM. To examine AM susceptibility to TB, bronchoalveolar lavage was obtained from normal and HIV infected volunteers and exposed to either virulent or avirulent TB for two hours, cultured for two days, lysed, and lysate inoculated into BACTEC bottles."
