Risk Factors for M. avium Complex Disease in AIDS Patients Re-evaluated

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has changed the risk factors associated with disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex disease (DMAC) in AIDS patients.

"DMAC in patients with AIDS has decreased since the widespread use of HAART, but substantial numbers of cases still occur," stated C.R. Horsburgh Jr., and colleagues in Atlanta, Georgia. "To determine factors associated with continued occurrence of DMAC, we analyzed all patients with a positive MAC blood culture at Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH) [Atlanta] from 1991-1998 and obtained detailed demographic, clinical, and survival information for the years 1991, 1994, and 1997."
