Clinical Trials on Rapid Gene-Based Test for Antibiotic-Resistant Superbug Begin

ID Biomedical Corp. (IDBE), Vancouver, British Columbia, announced that it has completed development and is beginning a clinical trial on its Velogene Rapid VRE Identification Assay, a gene-based test for the detection of vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

VRE is one of the so called "superbugs" because it is resistant to all commonly used antibiotics. VRE is a multi-drug resistant form of the Enterococcus bacterium, which is often acquired in hospitals. The test detects the vanA and vanB genes which are responsible for drug resistance and is based on the company's proprietary gene identification system, Cycling Probe Technology (CPT).
