The drug, manufactured by Glaxo Wellcome Inc., Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, will be available in pharmacies in mid-August 2000. Malarone is a combination of atovaquone and proguanil HCL. Atovaquone is currently marketed in the United States under the trade name Mepron for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Proguanil was approved in the U.S. in 1948 for use in malaria.
