New York Area Spraying to Kill Virus-Carrying Mosquitoes

Health officials in New York City mobilized insecticide-spraying trucks on July 18, 2000, after an encephalitis virus that killed seven people last year turned up again in mosquitoes and birds across the New York City area.

The spraying against mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus is being done only from trucks for the time being. No plans for spraying from planes or helicopters have been announced.

State Health Commissioner Antonia Novello said on July 17, 2000, that the virus had been found in mosquitoes collected in July in suburban Westchester and Suffolk counties. Infected birds also have been found in Westchester, Suffolk, and Rockland...
