HIV Infected Patients with TB May Present with Normal X-Ray

HIV infected patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) may present with normal chest X-rays and a negative sputum smear, cautioned researchers in Italy.

"HIV infected patients with TB exhibit atypical radiological presentation and negative sputum smear more frequently than their HIV negative counterparts," reported F. Palamieri and colleagues from IRCCS L. Spallanzani, Italy. "We performed a retrospective study based on chart review of 146 HIV infected patients with pulmonary symptoms and culture-proven pulmonary TB."
