Harvard Model: Pediatric TB Prevention Begins with Treating Children

Harvard University School of Public Health researchers say that the most effective way to prevent tuberculosis disease and death among children in the United States is not by treating adults, but by directly targeting children for treatment.

"The inherent assumption has been that by targeting adults, from whom children may become infected, TB morbidity and mortality among children also will be reduced effectively," S.J. Heymann and colleagues stated recently in the journal Pediatrics.

However, according to the semi-Markov model the Harvard investigators created, that is not necessarily the case.
