WHO Reports Epidemic Widening in Liberia

A yellow fever epidemic is gathering pace in Liberia, with at least 79 suspected cases now detected, the World Health Organization said August 29, 2000.

"As we suspected ... the epidemic is spreading," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said. "Very worrying is the fact that that six of these cases are on the outskirts of Monrovia," the West African country's capital.

The United Nations health agency is concerned that the disease could put the capital's 1.5 million people at risk if it takes hold in Monrovia. Cases have been now reported in five counties in Liberia, Hartl said.
