Discontinuation Did Not Increase Risk of TB and Meningitis in China

Discontinuation of the bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine did not increase the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) and meningitis in the Shun-yi county of China, researchers in that country reported.

"In Beijing, the notification of smear-positive tuberculosis has been below 20 per 100,000 since 1986 and declining," stated L.X. Zhang and colleagues from the Beijing Research Institute for Tuberculosis, and the Shun-yi Tuberculosis Center.

"In order to get a reliable estimation of annual risk of tuberculosis infection, BCG vaccination at birth has been discontinued since 1988 in Shun-yi county after establishing good case finding and high cure rates...
